desserts plusBy BERNIE BELLAN
We have avoided reporting on the pending closing of Desserts Plus, Winnipeg’s largest kosher foods supplier, out of consideration for the store’s owners, Barbara and Ed Reiss, who asked us not to report anything that might add to various rumours flying about.

Here though is what we do know, and which has been confirmed by the owners of Desserts Plus:
In a surprise e-mail sent to its customers Monday evening, Nov. 9, Desserts Plus announced that it has sold its building at 1975 Corydon Avenue.
Here is the complete text of that e-mail:
Dear Customers,
We have exciting news! We have sold our building and we will be giving up possession on Feb. 1st. It is important to note that we have not sold the business and we will be relocating. We are presently negotiating on a new location in the area. Watch for our announcement!
The store will continue to operate through the end of the year and we will continue to order supplies from our distributors. Please let us know if you are interested in ordering anything in case quantities over the next month to stock up.
If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to send us an email.
Many thanks for your continued support,
The Reisses
Following that initial e-mail we contacted Barbara Reiss to try and find out more about what plans the Reisses might have insofar as moving to a new location was concerned. We were told that they were actively searching for a new location, but that the nature of the future operation would depend upon the type of building they might be able to find.
Again, as of December 1st, we were told by Ed Reiss that there was nothing new to report about finding a new location. If there is anything new to report, we were told, we would be informed of that.
Other than that, we won’t speculate as to the future of Desserts Plus – much as that adds to the consternation of many Winnipeg Jews.
