Winnipeg’s own Lindsay Nelko (daughter of Danny Nelko and Shelley Shearer), has added to her growing list of laurels by being awarded the prestigious Dance Magazine’s award as “Best Emerging Choreographer” for 2015.

In giving that title to Lindsay, the magazine wrote “It was the year of the viral dance music video, and Lindsay Nelko’s, set to Ellie Goulding’s cover of Active Child’s ‘Hanging On’, landed her on our readers’ map of choreographers to watch. Easily transitioning between concert and commercial, she has choreographed for several television shows, international ballet companies and her own full-length show last summer – her prize for achieving 2nd runner-up at the 2013 Capezio A.C.E. Awards.”
In a conversation I had with Lindsay, who was back in Winnipeg for a time, she says that she still regards Winnipeg as her home. I mentioned to her that we were alerted to her latest award by her grandmother, Selma Shearer. I also mentioned to Lindsay that listening to her grandparents argue over who had the cordless phone when I phoned Selma to find out about Lindsay reminded me of listening to my own grandparents. I think Lindsay ought to choreograph a video of a Jewish grandmother and grandfather having an argument. That, for sure, would go viral!
